Your data
How My Journey Analytics organises your data — events, persons, sessions and properties — and the tools for keeping it clean and useful.
Everything in My Journey Analytics is built from a small set of building blocks. Knowing how they fit together makes every insight easier to build and to trust.
The building blocks
| Block | What it is |
|---|---|
| Events | One thing someone did, at one moment, such as a pageview, a click or a signup. |
| Persons | The people behind your events, anonymous or identified. |
| Sessions | A run of events from one visit, ending after 30 minutes without activity. |
| Properties | The details attached to events and persons, such as the page address or the person's plan. |
Events always belong to a person and usually to a session, so you can move from a chart to the people in it, and from a person to the sessions they had.
Organise your data
| Tool | Use it to |
|---|---|
| Actions | Give one name to a set of events, such as every click on a "Buy now" button. |
| Cohorts | Save a group of people, by properties or behaviour, to reuse in any insight. |
| Annotations | Mark a date on your charts, such as a launch or an outage. |
| Data management | Describe, tag and tidy the events and properties your project receives. |
| Channel type | See which marketing channel each session came from. |
Where to find it in the app
- Activity lists your events as they arrive (Live) and lets you search them (Events), with tabs for Sessions, Persons and Cohorts.
- The sidebar's Data menu holds the tools for managing your data, including Event definitions, Property definitions, Actions, Annotations, Persons and Cohorts.
History
Data management has a History tab that lists changes your team made to event and property definitions, such as new descriptions or tags. Only changes made in the app appear there; definitions created automatically when new events arrive are not listed.
Keep it healthy
- Event ingestion warnings explain events that were changed or dropped as they arrived.
- Anonymous and identified events explains when a person profile is created.
- Events retention explains how long events and recordings are kept.
Share it
- Subscriptions send insights and dashboards to your team on a schedule.
- The API lets your own systems send and read data.
