Annotations
Mark launches, campaigns and incidents on your charts, so everyone can see what changed when a number moves.
An annotation is a note pinned to a date and time, such as "New pricing page live" or "Checkout outage". It appears on the time axis of your charts, so when a line jumps or dips, the reason is right there.
Add an annotation
From a chart:
- Open an insight with a time axis, such as a trend.
- Click the point on the axis where the change happened, and choose to add an annotation.
From the annotations list:
- Open Data → Annotations.
- Click New annotation.
Either way, fill in:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Date and time | When it happened, in your project's time zone. |
| Scope | Where the annotation appears. See below. |
| Content | What happened, in up to 400 characters. Markdown formatting is supported. |
| Emoji | Optional: shown on the chart instead of the default marker. |
Scope
| Scope | Shown on |
|---|---|
| Insight | Only the insight it was added to. |
| Dashboard | Insights on one dashboard. |
| Project | Every insight in the project. |
| Organization | Every insight in every project of your organization. |
Use Project for changes that affect everything, such as a site launch, and Insight for notes that only make sense on one chart.
Edit or delete an annotation
Open Data → Annotations, find the annotation and open it to edit its date, scope or content, or to delete it. You can also open an annotation from the marker on a chart.
Good practice
- Annotate releases, campaigns, pricing changes, outages and tracking changes as they happen.
- Write for someone reading the chart months later: say what changed, not just "deploy".
- Annotate changes to your tracking, such as a renamed event, so nobody mistakes a tracking change for a change in behaviour.
