Cohorts
Save a group of people — by their properties, by what they did, or from a list — and reuse it in any insight, filter or feature flag.
A cohort is a saved group of people, such as "customers on the growth plan" or "people who signed up but never invited a teammate". Once saved, you can use it anywhere you filter or break down by people.
Dynamic and static cohorts
| Type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Dynamic | Defined by criteria and recalculated from the latest data, so people join and leave as they start or stop matching. |
| Static | Created once and never updated: a fixed list of people. |
Create a dynamic cohort
- Open Activity, then the Cohorts tab, and click New cohort.
- Give it a name and leave the type as Dynamic.
- Add criteria. Within a group of criteria, choose whether people must match all or any of them.
- Save. The cohort is calculated, and you can see who is in it.
Criteria can be based on:
| Kind | Examples |
|---|---|
| Person properties | People who have the property plan equal to growth, or who do not have an email. |
| Behaviour | People who completed an event, did not complete it, or completed it several times, within a time range you choose. |
| Other cohorts | People in, or not in, another cohort. |
More behavioural criteria, such as completing a sequence of events, completing an event for the first time or completing it regularly, are available on plans that include Behavioural cohorts.
Create a static cohort
- Click New cohort and choose Static as the type.
- Choose how to fill it: Criteria · One-time snapshot or Upload or add people.
- Save.
A one-time snapshot takes the people who match your criteria now, and keeps that list. Upload or add people lets you add people by hand or upload a CSV file.
For a CSV file with one column, put one distinct ID on each row; every row is read as data. For a file with several columns, include a header row with a person_id, distinct_id or email column.
You can also add a person to a static cohort from their person page, or save the people behind an insight's data point as a static cohort.
Use a cohort
- Filter an insight to people in, or not in, the cohort.
- Break down an insight by cohort to compare groups side by side.
- Target a feature flag at the cohort.
- See membership on each person's page, under Cohorts.
Internal and test users
New projects start with a cohort of internal and test users: people with the person property $internal_or_test_user. Filter out internal and test users, in Settings → Project → Customization, uses it to keep your own visits out of insights. The web library marks visits from localhost this way automatically, and myjourney.setInternalOrTestUser() marks the current user.
