Product analytics

Events, insights, funnels and retention — the building blocks for understanding what people do.

Product analytics turns the events from your site or app into answers: how many people did something, in what order, and whether they came back.

Events

An event is one thing a person did, at one moment, with properties that describe it.

  • Captured automatically by the web snippet: pageviews, page leaves, clicks and form submissions.
  • Custom events you send for the actions that matter to your business, such as signup_completed or plan_upgraded. See capturing custom events.

Events belong to a person. Once you identify a user, their history follows them across devices and sessions.

Insights

An insight is a saved question about your events, shown as a chart or a table.

  • Trends count events or people over time, for example daily signups for the last 30 days.
  • Breakdowns split any insight by a property, such as country, browser, campaign or plan.
  • Filters narrow it to the people or events you care about.

Save insights to a dashboard to keep a team on the same numbers.

Funnels

A funnel follows people through a sequence of steps, such as viewed pricing → started signup → completed signup, and shows how many reach each step.

  • Set a conversion window to say how long people have to finish.
  • See the time taken between steps.
  • Open the sessions of people who dropped off to see why.

Retention

Retention shows whether people come back. Choose a starting event, such as signing up, and a returning event, such as using a key feature, and the chart shows what share of each group returned in the following days or weeks.
