Connect Google Tag Manager
Connect your Google Tag Manager containers so Hive Setup can add and fix your tracking tags, with your Google account or our service account.
Hive Setup writes into your Google Tag Manager containers through a connection you make once per project. The connection lives in one place, Settings → Project → Integrations → Google Tag Manager, and every part of My Journey Analytics uses the same one. Hive Setup and the server-side page link there.
There are two ways to connect:
- Connect with Google: sign in with a Google account that can edit and publish your container.
- Use our service account: give our service account access to each container, so nobody's personal Google account is needed.
Connect with Google
- Open Settings → Project → Integrations → Google Tag Manager.
- Select Connect with Google, then the Connect with Google button.
- Sign in with a Google account that can edit and publish your container, and allow access.
You come back to the same settings page, with the connection listed. Hive Setup acts as that account, so it can see and change the containers that account can.
Use our service account
Open Settings → Project → Integrations → Google Tag Manager and select Use our service account. The card shows our service account's email address, a variable name and your project's verification code, each with a copy button, and three steps:
- Give our service account access. In Google Tag Manager, open Admin > User Management for the container and add the service account's email address with Publish permission.
- Prove the container is yours. In the container, add a Constant variable named
My Journey Analytics verification, with your project's verification code as its value, and save it. Only the value is checked, so another name works too. - Verify. Enter the container ID, for example
GTM-ABC1234, and select Verify.
When it works, you see "GTM-ABC1234 is connected" (with your container ID), and the container is listed under Verified containers.
If our service account isn't offered in your region, the card says "Our service account is not available in your region. Connect with Google instead."
Verify each container
Repeat the steps for each container. Hive Setup only uses the containers you verify, and with our service account only those appear when you pick a container in Hive Setup. A project can verify up to 50 containers.
If verification fails
The message says what is missing:
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| "We cannot see GTM-ABC1234 yet. In Google Tag Manager, go to Admin > User Management for the container and add … with Publish permission, then try again." | Add the service account's email address to the container with Publish permission. |
| "We can see GTM-ABC1234, but it does not have your verification code yet. Add a Constant variable named "My Journey Analytics verification" with the value …, save it, then try again." | Add the Constant variable with your verification code, and save it. |
| "Enter your container ID, for example GTM-ABC1234." | The container ID starts with GTM-, followed by letters and numbers. |
| "Google Tag Manager did not answer. Try again in a minute." | Try again shortly. |
If the connection stops working
If Google Tag Manager stops accepting the connection, for example because access was removed, Hive Setup says "This connection needs attention. Reconnect it in Settings, then come back." Hive may also say "The Google Tag Manager connection has expired. Reconnect it in Settings." Connect again from Settings → Project → Integrations → Google Tag Manager.
Next steps
- Run Hive Setup to write the fixes into your container.
- With a connection, Hive Check can also read your container and run the tag manager container checks.
