Data deletion
Delete a person and their events and recordings, remove single properties, or delete a whole project.
When someone asks you to erase their data, or you have collected something by mistake, you can delete it from My Journey Analytics in the app or through the API.
| To delete | Use |
|---|---|
| One person, and optionally their events and recordings | The person's page in the app |
| Many people at once | The persons API |
| A single property from a person | The person's page, or the persons API |
| Everything in a project | Settings → Project → Danger zone |
Deletion cannot be undone.
Delete a person
- Open People and groups and find the person, for example by email or distinct ID.
- Open the person and select Delete person.
- Choose whether to Also delete all corresponding events and Also delete all corresponding recordings.
- Type
deleteto confirm, then select Delete person.
The person and their properties are removed straight away. Their events and recordings, if you chose to delete them, are not removed immediately: they are deleted on a set schedule, at quiet times. Only data captured before the deletion is removed.
What deleting a person does not do
- It does not stop new data arriving. If the person keeps using your site or app, new events create a new person. To stop tracking them, make sure your code respects their choice, for example with
opt_out_capturing(). - It does not remove data you have already sent elsewhere, such as through webhooks or other destinations.
Delete many people
Use the bulk delete endpoint of the persons API. It takes up to 1,000 person UUIDs or distinct IDs per request, and the same choices to delete events and recordings:
curl -X POST https://app.myjourneyanalytics.com/api/projects/12345/persons/bulk_delete/ \
-H "Authorization: Bearer <personal API key>" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "distinct_ids": ["user_123"], "delete_events": true, "delete_recordings": true }'To keep the people but delete their events and recordings, add "keep_person": true.
Remove a single property
To remove one piece of information, such as a phone number, without deleting the person:
- on the person's page, delete the property from their properties list, or
- call the persons API's
delete_propertyendpoint.
This removes the property from the person. Events that recorded the value at the time keep it in their own properties.
If your code keeps sending the property, it comes back. Stop sending it first, for example with property_denylist in the snippet's options (see privacy controls).
Delete a project
Deleting a project removes all its data: events, people, recordings, insights, dashboards and settings.
- Open Settings → Project → Danger zone.
- Under Delete project, start the deletion.
- Type the project's name to confirm, then select the delete button.
For projects with lots of data, the clean-up can take several hours, and you receive an email when it is complete. Only use this when you no longer need anything in the project.
Prevent the next request
The simplest data to delete is data you never collected.
- Mask or block sensitive parts of your pages in session replay.
- Turn on Discard client IP data if you do not need IP addresses.
- Avoid sending personal details, such as email addresses or phone numbers, as event properties unless you need them.
