Persons

The people behind your events — how person profiles are created, what they hold, and how to view, split or delete them.

A person is everyone and everything behind a set of distinct IDs: one visitor's anonymous browsing, the user they became when they signed in, and their activity on other devices. Persons let you see a customer's whole journey in one place and use what you know about them in any insight.

Capturing person profiles

A person profile holds a person's properties and links their events together. With the snippet's default setting, person_profiles: 'identified_only', a profile is created the first time you:

  • identify the visitor with myjourney.identify(...);
  • set person properties on them;
  • call myjourney.alias(...) or myjourney.createPersonProfile().

Visitors you never identify are counted in your charts without a profile. To create profiles for every visitor, start the library with person_profiles: 'always'. See Anonymous and identified events for the trade-offs.

Find a person

  1. Open Activity and the Persons tab.
  2. Search for the person, or filter the list by person properties.
  3. Open a person to see their profile.

You can also click through to people from almost any chart: select a data point to see the persons behind it.

What a person page shows

TabWhat it holds
PropertiesThe person's properties. You can add, edit and delete properties here.
EventsEverything the person did, newest first.
RecordingsTheir recorded sessions.
ExceptionsErrors captured for them.
SurveysTheir survey responses.
CohortsThe cohorts they belong to.
Feature flagsFeature flags whose conditions use person properties.
HistoryChanges made to the person in the app.

Some tabs only appear when the matching product is in use.

The header shows when the person was first seen, and whether merge restrictions apply: once a person is identified, they cannot be merged into another identified person.

Location

When an event gets location properties, they are also copied to the person. The $geoip_ properties, such as $geoip_country_name, hold the person's latest location, and the matching $initial_geoip_ properties, such as $initial_geoip_country_name, keep the first one seen. Use them to filter people or break down insights by where people are.

How people are named

The app shows a person by a property such as their email or name, falling back to their distinct ID. To choose which properties are used, open Settings → Project → Product analytics and set Person display name.

Split a person

If two people were joined by mistake, for example by identifying with a shared ID, open the person and click Split IDs. Choose Split all distinct IDs to give each ID its own person, or Extract specific distinct IDs to move only some of them out.

Delete a person

Open the person and click Delete person. You can choose to also delete all of their events and all of their recordings. Deleting cannot be undone.
