Events retention

How long My Journey Analytics keeps your events and session recordings, how your plan sets the limit and how to keep data for less time.

Retention is how long your data stays available for analysis. Events and session recordings have separate retention periods.

Events

Each project keeps its events for a set number of months. By default this is your plan's limit: plans that include Event retention set the limit in months, and without it events are kept for 84 months (seven years).

Events older than the period stop showing in insights, dashboards and queries straight away. They are then permanently deleted in a clean-up that runs once a day. Deleted events can't be restored.

Keep events for a shorter time

Project admins can choose a shorter period than the plan's limit:

  1. Open Settings → Project → Product analytics.
  2. Under Event retention, choose a period shorter than your plan's limit, from 1 month upwards. Choose Your plan's limit to go back to the default.
  3. If the new period is shorter than the current one, confirm the change.

Below the setting, the app shows the date from which events are kept. Shortening the period hides older events straight away, and the next daily clean-up deletes them. Lengthening it again does not bring deleted events back.

To keep events longer than your plan allows, select Contact us below the setting.

Session recordings

Each project chooses how long its new recordings are kept:

  1. Open Settings → Project → Session replay.
  2. Under Data retention, choose a period: 30 days, 90 days, 1 year or 5 years.

The periods you can choose are limited by your plan's Replay retention, in months. Without Replay retention in your plan, the limit is 1 year and the period can't be changed. Once a day, any project set to a longer period than its plan allows is lowered to the plan's limit.

A change only applies to recordings that start afterwards; existing recordings keep the period they started with. Recordings past their period stop showing in the app and are then deleted. Changing the period needs project admin access.

Removing data sooner

You do not have to wait for the retention period to remove a person's data. Deleting a person from their person page can also delete all of their events and recordings; see Persons.

To keep data from being collected in the first place, see Configuring the library and Session replay masking.
