Ownership verification
Show that a website is yours before Hive Setup changes its Tag Manager. Verification happens by itself after a check, or with a DNS record or a meta tag.
Hive Setup changes a site's Tag Manager only after you verify that you own the site. Everything else works without it: you can run Hive Check, monitor the site, connect Tag Manager and make a Hive Setup plan before the site is verified. That is how we audit a site before onboarding.
The site's page shows its state at the top. A verified site shows Verified by our tag, Verified by Tag Manager, Verified by DNS record or Verified by meta tag, with when it was verified. Otherwise it shows Verify that you own and the site's address, with the ways to do it.
Automatic
After each finished check, Hive verifies the site by itself when the check saw either:
- our tag on the site's own page, with this project's key. See Install the snippet;
- a Tag Manager container on the page that your project's Tag Manager connection can open. See Connect Google Tag Manager. A container that is only seen on the site, without your connection, doesn't count.
For a guided check, we confirm what the check saw by loading the homepage from our side.
With a DNS record
- On the site's page, select Show the DNS record.
- Add a TXT record with the value shown, for example
myjourney-verification=…. Add it on your domain, or on the exact host of the site. - Select Check now.
DNS changes can take a while to show. If the check doesn't find the record yet, try again later.
With a meta tag
- On the site's page, select Show the DNS record. The meta tag is shown under it.
- Put the
myjourney-verificationmeta tag in the<head>of your homepage. - Select Check the meta tag.
What verification covers
Verifying a site also covers its domain and the domain's subdomains. For example, verifying www.example.com covers example.com and shop.example.com.
Verification stays in place. A later check that doesn't see the tag or container again doesn't remove it; the site's page shows when the evidence was Last seen.
A site verified by our tag also gets the checks of events arriving in your project. The other methods prove that you control the site, nothing more.
A Google Analytics ID on the page doesn't verify a site, because anyone can copy it.
